1. About Traditional Lantern Craft in Hoi An

The lantern craft in Hoi An, Quang Nam has a long history and has been maintained and developed until now. At that time, in 1644, in order to escape from the Ming Dynasty overthrowing the Qing Dynasty, Lord Nguyen Phuc Lan gave the Minh Huong people to live in Fujian, also known as Hoi An port. The Ming people are always nostalgic about the country, in order to remember their village they brought the lanterns to Hoi An and hang its in front of their houses. Among them, there is a man named Xa Duong, who specializes in making lanterns for festivals or contests, military trumpet lanterns … According to the senior citizens living in Hoi An, he is the “ancestor” of this lantern craft.

Hoi An’s Lanterns has been regarded by the whole country as a high value art and specific of Viet nam culture. At the same time, Quang Nam Standardization and Quality Assurance Agency recognizes nine standard forms of lanterns as circular lantern, octagonal lantern, hexagonal lantern, pumpkin lantern, garlic lantern, papaya fruit lantern, cake lantern,umbrella lantern. In addition, there are many kind of drag troops, dragon, fish shape lanterns  in different colors. Specially, today there are still more than a hundred years old lanterns because its were made of valuable wood, carved very sophisticated, is the masterpiece painting.

2. Purpose and meaning of the festival

Nowadays, many visiters from all over the world come to Hoi An ancient town as a ideal place to enjoy beautiful lanterns. In recent years, the number of tourists from South Korea has been rising steadily and ranked second in the total number of visitors in Hoi An, Vietnam.

To mark the relationship between two countries Viet Nam – Korea, 22.12.1992 and 22.12.2017. This year, on 11 and 12.3.2017, Hoi An will take place a huge display of lanterns, promise to interest in many visitors. Quang Nam province in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Viet Nam hold the event.

3. Contents of the Lantern Festival

Hoi An, Vietnam and Korea’s lanterns will show off the most colorful designs at the festival including fashion shows, cultural performances, an exhibition with exotic, handpainted lanterns featuring the scenic architecture of Korea and Vietnam and a culinary exchange between the two countries.

Many countries have successfully organized the event and attracted more than a million visitors like Korea, Japan, Taiwan, USA, UK … In Hoi An, Vietnam, the huge lantern festival is divided into five zones: Peace Area, Love Area, Hope Area, Viet-Han Area and Children Area. Each area is splendidly arranged with many colorful lanterns designed and length from 10m – 30m. In particular, more than 40 lanterns are displayed in the central area with the “huge” size up to 86m.
